Presentation Description:
The presentation will cover environmental forensics as applied to the investigation of sites impacted by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). With a limited number of remedial options, and subsequent high costs of clean-up, the focus at many sites is on determining the source(s) of PFAS. PFAS datasets are typically complex, and signatures of samples often change as a result of the unique environmental fate and transport characteristics of the individual compounds, making it challenging for LSPs to answer questions like “what is the source of the PFAS?”, “is this is comingled plume of PFAS?”, or “what portion of the contamination is my client’s responsibility?”

This presentation will focus on the types of data and data analyses that may be useful in a forensics investigation involving PFAS and are therefore beyond those used in a typical site investigation concerned with identifying and delineating a plume. The outline is below:

  • Understanding the Background
  • What You Need to Know about Fate and Transport of PFAS
  • Analytical Techniques for PFAS Forensics
  • Visualizing Your PFAS Data
  • Numerical Analyses for Complex PFAS Datasets
