This course, approved for 1.0 DEP Regulatory credit (#1825A), is a repeat presentation that was offered at the Environmental Symposium in April 2024. If you received credit then, you will be unable to receive credit for taking this on-demand version. Refer to 309 CMR 3.09(2)(c).

Course Description:

MassDEP will present two case studies on PFAS in Massachusetts water resources.

Long-Distance Transport of PFAS in Surface Water Bodies
Presented by Natalie Johnson, Section Chief, Technical Support and Site Discovery Section, Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup, NERO MassDEP

This case study describes an investigation of the source of PFAS in surface waters in eastern Massachusetts and provides insights on the fate and transport of PFAS in groundwater discharging to surface water(s). Ms. Johnson will discuss the U.S. Geological Survey and MassDEP’s approach to the surface water investigation, analytical findings of surface water sampling, source identification, and observed transport of PFAS in surface water.

The Occurrence of PFAS in Massachusetts Public Water Supplies
Presented by Derrick Salvatore, Technical Support and Site Discovery Team, NERO MassDEP

This case study presents the results of a detailed evaluation of PFAS6 levels detected in samples drawn from 1,406 public water supplies (PWS) in Massachusetts between 2016-2022. The purpose of the evaluation was to characterize the occurrence of PFAS across the state and evaluate similarities, differences, and/or correlations with respect to water supply source, geographic/land use area, PFAS6 concentrations, and PFAS chemistries. Comparisons of PFAS6 concentrations detected between groundwater and surface water sources, and confined and unconfined aquifers will be discussed.
