LSPA Continuing Education On-Demand Course

Risk and the MCP: Understanding Risk Assessment and Implementing Risk Management at Your MCP Sites

Course Description
This course is designed for environmental professionals seeking a clear, practical understanding of risk-based decision-making under the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP). It will cover the role of risk assessment in site characterization, cleanup level development, and decision-making—from data collection to site closure. Participants will learn the MCP’s “No Significant Risk” standard and gain clarity on when and how to apply the three risk characterization methods (1, 2, and 3), as well as specialized approaches such as Imminent Hazard Evaluations and focused risk assessments for Release Abatement Measures.

The session will also address risk management—how to turn risk assessment findings into effective site management strategies. Through case studies and interactive discussions, attendees will explore exposure scenarios, data quality considerations, and the selection of exposure point concentrations. Whether new to MCP risk-based work or seeking a refresher, this course offers a balanced mix of regulatory context, practical tools, and real-world examples to help you manage contaminated sites with confidence.
