LSPA Environmental Symposium:
This course is being held during the LSPA Environmental Symposium 2024. Details on the day's events can be found here.

Course Description:
The LSPA is committed to bringing our members more information on how Artificial Intelligence is already impacting and will continue to impact our practice.  Here is our first course!

Advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning have been applied to environmental data in several settings. This course will describe the use of a machine learning model to allow rapid evaluation of potential groundwater plume dimensions and provide statistical estimates of plume capture. The method compiles information from thousands of prior LNAPL, DNAPL, and PFAS sites into a prediction of the longitudinal, lateral, and vertical extents of dissolved-phase contaminant plumes.

Traditional site investigation and characterization utilizes considerable amounts of detailed information from a single site to provide estimates of plume extent based on analytical or numerical models, ranging in complexity depending on various fate and transport parameters. Use of this approach requires very limited site-specific information and rapidly evaluates it against thousands of previously assessed sites to produce site-specific estimate of plume extent for the subject site.

Use of this tool can help in the evaluation of proposed investigative actions, identifying potential gaps in proposed or ongoing remedial actions, and ultimately improve outcomes.

Time for Questions & Answers is included throughout.
