U.S. EPA Releases Its Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Action Plan
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released the “EPA’s Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Action Plan.” This 60-page PFAS Action Plan identifies EPA-led short-term actions, longer-term research, and potential regulatory approaches designed to reduce the risks associated with PFAS in the environment. The Executive Summary lists “Key EPA Actions Addressing PFAS-Related Challenges”:
- Expand toxicity information for PFAS
- Develop new tools to characterize PFAS in the environment
- Evaluate cleanup approaches
- Develop guidance to facilitate cleanup of contaminated groundwater
- Use enforcement tools to address PFAS exposure in the environment and assist states in enforcement activities
- Use legal tools such as those in TSCA to prevent future PFAS contamination
- Address PFAS in drinking water using regulatory and other tools
- Develop new tools and materials to communicate about PFAS
The LSPA will continue to monitor and communicate state and federal developments.
