Course Description:

This course will provide an overview of topics related to bedrock geology investigation and remediation as well as two case studies of remediation sites in Massachusetts. The presence of contamination in bedrock groundwater poses unique challenges for site investigation, conceptual model (CSM) development, remediation, and risk assessment. Studies of groundwater flow in fractured bedrock require assessments of local geologic structure, tectonic history, and characterization of fracture orientation, density, and transmissivity and are further complicated by varying hydraulic properties, as well as groundwater flow and contaminant transport mechanisms.

Despite modern investigation and characterization techniques, 3-dimensional modeling capabilities, and improved analytical methods, bedrock plume assessments and remediation are typically subject to a degree of uncertainty that is disproportionate to the cost and resources required.
