LSPA 4th Annual Environmental SymposiumCharacterization of Petroleum Contaminated SitesWhen: Thursday, April 9, 2026 LSPA Environmental Symposium: Course Description:
Guidance document #WSC-02-411 (Implementation of the MADEP VPH/EPH Approach) was issued by MassDEP on October 31, 2002. The Agency is currently in the process of updating and expanding this document to reflect technological and regulatory changes over the last 24 years. This presentation will review the basic concepts of the aliphatic/aromatic hydrocarbon fraction approach developed by MassDEP to characterize risks posed by exposures to petroleum contaminated media, along with the VPH/EPH/APH analytical methods developed by the Agency to quantify hydrocarbon contaminant levels. A wide variety of implementation issues will also be addressed, including use of analytical screening data, analyte lists, LNAPL entrainment in groundwater samples, groundwater, soil gas, and indoor air sampling and testing, vapor intrusion, risk assessment, LNAPL assessment and remediation, and Permanent and Temporary Solutions. The qualitative utility of chromatograms will be highlighted, especially when evaluating indoor air data. Recommendations and “rules of thumb” will be presented, including those for “homeowner oil release sites”. The course will conclude with a question-and-answer session. This course has been approved for 2.0 DEP Regulatory credits (#1925) and 1.0 CT LEP credits (CTLEP-644). This is a new course. Please note: CT LEP Board has offered half credit for each symposium course. Attendees must earn a minimum of 2.0 CT LEP credits during the symposium. Multiple courses can be paired together.
