The presentation will focus on two specific indoor air topics: 

1. Implications of new EPA TSCA Risk Assessment for Trichloroethene
   Health risks associated with trichloroethylene (TCE) are managed at 21E Disposal Sites based on both chronic health effects and developmental health effects associated with short-term exposures. The science indicating developmental health effects from short-term exposure to TCE, however, is not robust and has been widely challenged. USEPA’s Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) recently reevaluated the developmental health effects studies and has opted to use other health effects to support risk management. This presentation will summarize the TSCA review and present possible implications for management of risks and response actions associated with vapor intrusion and indoor air evaluations.

2. Risk Considerations of Indoor Air Background in Residences, Schools, and Offices The presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as a background condition in residential and non-residential indoor air has been well documented. Yet, risks associated with indoor air background conditions may substantially contribute toward, or even exceed, risk management thresholds used by the MassDEP and other states. Consequently, it is important to recognize the implications of indoor air background in support of risk management decision making. This presentation will review the results of a recently published background indoor air study of schools and offices, and will use those results in combination with other published indoor air background data, to characterize health risks associated with residential and non-residential indoor air background VOC concentrations. The implications of these findings on vapor intrusion investigations and response action decisions will be discussed.
