Membership Meeting Presentation Information The LSPA December Membership Meeting will feature the following applied research presentations highlighting recent advancements in PFAS treatment and waste management:
PFAS Removal from Landfill Leachate: Efficiency, Air Emissions, and Foamate Management, presented by Lingke Zeng Foam fractionation (FF) pilot studies were conducted at two landfills to provide a design basis for a full-scale treatment system for PFAS in leachate and foamate (PFAS waste concentrate) management strategy. The pilot study consisted of multiple phases to obtain PFAS removal efficiency data and (to our knowledge) many first-of-kind air emissions measurements/results. Ms. Zeng will review the phases and the key findings of the pilot study which include Foam Fractionation Removal Efficiency, Air Control, and Foamate Management.
Smoldering Combustion Treatment of PFAS-impacted Investigation-Derived Waste, presented by Laura Kinsman Smoldering is an energy-efficient, flameless form of combustion that has been applied both in situ and ex situ to treat a wide range of contaminated soils and other organic wastes, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Although PFAS require high temperatures for destruction, supplementary fuels can be used to facilitate smoldering combustion to achieve these temperatures. Previous work has demonstrated reduction of PFAS concentrations in soil and granular activated carbon (GAC) to near or below detection limits using smoldering at both the lab and field scale. Ms. Kinsman will discuss the capabilities of Savron’s mobile, rapidly deployable smoldering treatment system, STARxpress, and will provide a case study focusing on the treatment results from the Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson Milatery Air Force facility, as well as highlights of other recent smoldering demonstrations at US Department of Defense sites.
A Q&A session will follow the presentations.
