Webinar Description: 

The course objective is to familiarize LSPs with the principles and tools of risk communication and specifically, how they can be implemented at disposal sites impacted by PFAS contamination. The course is designed to provide experiences and perspectives from a variety of stakeholders, with a presentation team that includes an LSP, environmental and risk communication professionals, and state regulators representing Massachusetts and Connecticut. Attendees will benefit from stakeholders from the two states addressing similar issues and concerns regarding how they approach risk communication at a site with PFAS contamination. The course will provide LSPs guidance and practical insights for communicating risks associated with PFAS in the environment, and for helping affected persons understand how disposal site cleanup decisions are made to achieve regulatory compliance.

Case studies of two high profile disposal sites impacted by PFAS will be integrated throughout the course to highlight the application of specific risk communication techniques; this will include identifying approaches that have worked well and those that have not, presenting questions and concerns raised by communities and other entities affected by PFAS contamination, explaining how such questions and concerns can be addressed effectively, and evaluating if/how project goals have been achieved. Brief summaries of the two disposal sites will be sent to registered participants in advance of the course to allow sufficient time to become familiar with the case studies.
