Key Remediation Design Aspects, with Focus on Bedrock Issues

This membership meeting presentation has been approved to the LSP Board of Registration for 1.0 technical LSP credit (#1684). It was previously presented in Andover, MA in January 2020.

If you are not fully vaccinated, you are welcome to attend but required to wear a mask during all indoor gatherings and at outdoor gatherings where appropriate social distancing is not possible.

Meeting Description:

This one-hour-long presentation will discuss key remedial design aspects with emphasis on the difficulties encountered in remediation of bedrock sites. The information will assist LSPs in understanding the difficulties likely to be encountered and tools available to better direct remediation and understand remedial limitations. Key difficulties in bedrock environments include:

Understanding groundwater hydraulics,
Geochemistry,
Contaminant distribution,
Matrix diffusion and
The impacts on remedial success.

Tools used to develop appropriate conceptual site models will be discussed; including flute systems, the use of tracers, and natural attenuation assessments.

Case studies that focus on remedial implementation will be discussed. Remedial technologies will include monitored natural attenuation, enhanced bioremediation, in situ chemical oxidation, thermal enhancements, and hydraulic capture.
