LSP Association Scholarship Fund Awards Scholarships for the 2018-2019 Academic Year

For the past 15 years, the LSPA Scholarship Fund has been presenting educational scholarships to individuals pursuing a degree in the field of science, environmental engineering, or other major that is consistent with becoming an LSP or environmental professional.  At LSPA’s June 13th Membership Meeting in Taunton, MA, the LSPA Scholarship Fund awarded two individual scholarships.

Bill Betters and Chuck Myette from the LSPA Scholarship
Fund Board of Directors along with Award Recipient, Sean Larkin

Sean Larkin received the Jeff Hardin Memorial Award, which is presented to an LSP Association member or member of their immediate family, who exemplifies the goal of environmental excellence.  Sean is a student member of the LSP Association and is currently pursuing a Master’s of Science degree in Hydrogeology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (UMass).  Sean plans to focus on groundwater modeling, contaminant remediation, and water resource development.  Sean has worked as an intern with the MassDEP Southeast Regional Office (SERO) Drinking Water Program in 2016 and with the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority in 2017.  Sean received excellent reviews from his UMass professors as well as his supervisors at the MassDEP SERO office and the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority.  Following graduation, Sean plans to pursue a career in environmental consulting.

Professor Michael Penzo, Bridgewater State University and
Chuck Myette from the LSPA Scholarship Fund Board of Directors
along with Award Recipient, Doug MacLeod

Our second award recipient is Doug MacLeod, a recent graduate of Bridgewater State University.  Doug, also a student member of the LSP Association, plans to attend the University of New Hampshire in the fall to pursue a Master’s Degree in Geology.  In 2017, Doug spent his summer working on a Woods Hole research project examining redox reactions that could support chemolithoautotrophic life at submarine hydrothermal vents.  Doug’s Bridgewater State University professor’s, Dr. Saccocia and Professor Michael Penzo, highly praised Doug’s intelligence and his work ethic.

Congratulations to the award recipients and best of luck in school this fall!

About The LSPA Scholarship Fund
The LSPA Scholarship Fund was incorporated in 2006 as a 501(c) (3) charitable organization. The purpose of the scholarship program is to support continued education in environmental fields in the Massachusetts and New England region. While the number and amount of the scholarships vary each year, the objective is to provide two $5,000 scholarships each year to qualified individuals. Since 2003 the LSPA Scholarship Fund has awarded 41 scholarships totaling more than $170,000. The Fund is a separate corporation from the LSPA, but both organizations share the goal of advancing the field of hazardous waste site cleanup in Massachusetts.
